Rate It: The Nissan March Super Turbo Was a Twin-Charged 1980s Oddity

The Nissan March may not have a reputation as a high-performance Nissan model, but a few interesting versions did pop up over its lifetime.

Case in point, the 1989 March Super Turbo. Built to meet homologation rules for Nissan’s own March Little Dynamite Cup Race, the Super Turbo got its name from the super- and turbocharged 930cc four-cylinder engine. That twin-charged powerplant—similar to ones recently used by Volvo—was said to be good for about 108 horsepower and 96 lb.-ft. of torque.

Unlike Volvo, however, the engine in the Super Turbo uses a magnetic clutch to engage the supercharger up to around 4000 rpm, after which the supercharged is disengaged, and the turbocharger boosts the engine through the rest of the power band.

In total, it’s said that 10,000 Super Turbos were built, with buyers having the option of a five-speed manual transmission or three-speed automatic transmission, with a limited-slip differential standard on all models.

Is the Nissan March Super Turbo a rare homologation special worthy of saving, or are there less complicated performance cars that are better worth your time?

90.6 inch wheelbase, 1631 lbs.  I'd rock that.

This thing has special significance to me as an  engine donor for a Nissan Pao.

Mighty Car Mods on YouTube have a fantastic series on buying/importing/modify one of these.  It's well done and the car seems like a joy.  Marty/Moog have access to some pretty great machinery but they seem to be counting this one as a keeper.

And also #HONK

I'd have one  of these in a second, I'm a complete sucker for this era of lightweight tweaked little hatchbacks.  This, or a Mazda 323 GTX?

You can get a lot more HP in a simpler engine for less $ for sure. Even in it's day, I would understand all the complexity if you were competing in a Kei-class race series, but it was their own cup race. To me, it is an impressive engineering package that would be fun as hell to drive. Don't waste time trying to compare it or understand it, just wring it out and enjoy.

AKA Nissan Micra in Canada sadly never with anything but some anemic four. March was the base for the S-Cargo etc.

As I am currently racing a 100hp 1600lb car I'd day yes I'd happily have one of these.

I could be wrong, but when I look at that engine I see 3 wires for the sparkplugs...is this really a 4 cylinder or is it a 3 cylinder?
