Winning one of our annual events might be enough for some, but not for Daniel Cummings–better known in these parts as nocones.
Back in 2022, nocones entered the latest evolution of what very well might be the wildest Subaru 360 ever built into the $2000 Challenge, our annual low-buck competition. Dubbed the “LMP360,” the goal of the project is in the name: To turn an old Subaru 360 into a Le Mans Prototype-style race car–and did we mention he built it all for less than $2000?
The unusual low-buck racer didn’t just look fast, it drove fast, too, scoring first overall at last year’s $2000 Challenge.
So, what’s hiding underneath the skin of this unique Subaru racer? A stock EJ20 Subaru boxer engine currently good for 227 horsepower and 217 lb.-ft. of torque. While that might not seem like a lot of oomph, remember that the car only weighs in at 1875 pounds.
In addition to a full tubular frame chassis and the more obvious multi-element aerodynamic upgrades, the LMP360 also features a pull-rod suspension setup with custom dual A-arms front and rear. Falken RT660s wrapped around Enkei RPF1s also help keep the power to the ground.
What is the Ultimate Track Car Challenge? It’s our annual no-holds-barred track competition that simply seeks the fastest machines on four wheels. The rules are brief: Car and driver must pass a safety inspection. Period.
Pretty much everyone is welcome: New, old, factory-bought and home-built. Wings are cool. So are box flares, giant intercoolers and sequential shifters.

The Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge is presented by Tire Rack, in association with Wilwood Engineering, HP Tuners, SPA Technique, Deatschwerks, CRC Industries and Volkswagen, with trophies from Track Advantage, Stifflers, BimmerWorld, HGSI, XS Batteries and Hoosier Tire.
