What a great series! I always wonder where the cars are now. Is the Saab still out there bombing around the backwoods or has entropy taken over?
Not too many moons ago, we wanted to compete in stage rally. Our weapon of choice? A 1977 Saab 99.
Why an old-school, front-wheel-drive Saab and not a more conventional all-wheel-drive car like a Subaru Impreza? Simply put, we wanted to build “something a bit more funky—more vintage, too.” As well, the 99 was often the go-to choice for grassroots rally efforts like ourselves.
Read how we turned a Swanky Swede into an old-school rally machine at the links below:

You know, I don't know. Anyone see it lately?
And glad that you're digging these past projects.
It went to a gentleman from California who said he was going to campaign it--but I think it wound up being stored in his mom's garage in Ormond By The Sea for a while. Haven't heard from him in a while.
I own it now in Bend, OR.
The engine is not currently running. I had it running pretty well but the head gasket let loose last spring exposing some bad corrosion in the head. It's not getting the love it needs because I spend most of my time on my 2 other 99s. A 79 daily driver (summers only) and my 78 hillclimb and track-day car.
As it's not really a viable rally car any longer, it will either be built into a 78 Turbo tribute car with correct 78 engine, or a hillclimb/track car with a 16v Turbo engine like my 78 16vT, Frank.
