The Ultimate Track Car Challenge attracts all kinds of cars.
The rules? There are no rules. This Viper Stohr posted the fastest time, and was crowned the Ultimate Track Car.
This isn't your mother's 135i–this one belches fire and makes more than 700 horsepower.
Like M3s? You'll love this BMW V8-powered example.
Brian Faessler’s extreme Ford Mustang took home the fastest Ford trophy with a time of 1:49.953.
VIRGINIA INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY, ALTON, Va. (May 20, 2016)—They came, they saw, they conquered. Thirty-eight of the country’s fastest track cars descended upon Virginia International Raceway on May 20 for the 2016 Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports. After a full day of thrills and spills, Victor Seaber and the Viper Stohr team took the overall win in their Viper Stohr WF-1.4 with a 1:46.773 time through VIR’s hills.
While the Viper team walked away with top honors, it wasn’t a walk in the park. A flurry of incredible track terrors gave chase, including Brian Faessler’s extreme Ford Mustang and a 700-horsepower BMW 135i piloted by pro driver Joey Atterbury. And that’s just the beginning. The field for this year’s event was one of the most impressive we’ve seen in years. In fact, the top 12 drivers all managed to turn lap times under Virginia International Raceway’s coveted two-minute mark.
Mike Skeen, a regular Ultimate Track Car Challenge participant, managed to make time in his busy schedule to join us again this year. As many other drivers were making their way through tech on the night before the event, Skeen was on a plane back from Europe after driving an event at Spa Francorchamps. The jet lag from Belgium didn’t seem to bother him as he clinched fifth overall and the “Fastest Vintage” award in an outrageously beautiful Chevy Camaro.
Also impressive: A completely showroom stock entry managed a 17th-place finish. When we say showroom stock, we mean it. The 2016 Ford Mustang GT350R driven by Matt Meakin had just over 400 miles on the clock and managed a 2:04.19 lap time.
The Ultimate Track Car Challenge is an annual competition held by Grassroots Motorsports for the sole purpose of finding America’s fastest track cars. Anyone can enter with any type of car, and there are no restrictions on vehicle preparation. The event has been hosted at VIR for the last nine years.
Full event coverage will be featured in the November issue of Grassroots Motorsports, including a complete run-down of the entire pack. You can get your subscription for just $10 right here.
Virginia International Raceway is hidden away in the hills of Alton, Virginia, straddling the border of Virginia and North Carolina. Since its reopening in 1998, VIR has grown to be one of the finest tracks in the nation. The beautiful 17-turn, 3.27-mile course offers complicated curves and elevation changes for the ultimate driving experience.

All the american iron toward the top of the results list is very impressive! American cars have come a long way in the past 20 years.
This event was a great event with some great cars and people. You will not want to miss the coverage and photos in the UTCC edition of Grassroots Motorsports magazine.
This was also my first Hyperfest and based on what we saw, I feel we can add much more to the show next year. We talked about anything from drift coverage to bringing project cars to having JG being our on track announcer for the event.
We need lots more PIX!!!! For those of us that can not make it to the event we need to live vicariously through PIX!!!!
