It doesn't surprise me honestly. Hip hop music is usually about excess, and what better way to show off that excess than with expensive cars both new and old, especially convertible 64 Impala's on hydraulics.
You’d think that rock music features the most automobiles, right? After all, just consider how iconic songs like Chuck Berry’s “Maybellene” and Sammy Hagar’s “I Can’t Drive 55” are.
As it turns out, rock music actually comes in last place.
According to a study done by Compare.com (a website where you can compare car insurance companies, apparently), the genre with the most references to cars and trucks in its music videos is rap and hip-hop.
Where do these results come from? Compare.com watched “250 music videos from rock, hip-hop, country, EDM and pop artists to find out which cars were most popular in those genres; which artists are most obsessed with cars; and what videos featured the most rides.”
In total, a whopping 76% of rap and hip-hip videos featured an automobile, with some sort of Chevrolet convertible being the most popular. This compares to a paltry 32% of cars featured in music videos from rock and metal–convertibles from Cadillac and Chevrolet are favorites there.
Although this isn’t the most scientific of studies (though the website does discuss its methodology and limitations), its results are still interesting to look at.
