This is definitely on the check out list WHEN I make it to Japan!
When is a parking lot not just a parking lot? When each weekend it serves as a beacon for the coolest cars in the greater Tokyo area. Another thing we found during our visit: ridiculously clean public bathrooms.

I'm probably not the best at explaining this, but a lot of the young, hip kids are mounting their oil coolers on the front of their bumpers.
It's mainly a style choice to resemble cars in a Japanese racing series from back in the day if I'm not mistaken.

If I remember correctly, that's been the style for 20 years or more. May depend on what you mean by back in the day, though

Frankly, it's probably not even hooked up. It's a visual reference.

This. As far as I know it's an element of - or at least common to - bosozoku.

hashiriya. Shakotan boogie (a famous Japanese manga) did a good job of showcasing the Japanese tuning culture for this "modification".
since we are in this topic, does anyone here know an artist that can do this style of drawing? I'm willing to pay a good penny for their time. I want a large penciled sketch of me next to my nc, but in this art style. Put the word out, as I know quite a few that would pay in excess of $100 to have someone draw something that they would do in their spare time. (Hell, I've been toying with the idea. I do draw, just not as much as I used to!)
