The look was unmistakable: white paint, green trim and a logo featuring a reversed pair of 4’s. Team uniforms were spotless. Group 44 Inc. helped raise the bar on car prep and team presentation.
Bob Tullius, himself a talented driver, formed the team in 1962 with a single Triumph. That drive to operate at the top level, however, came from necessity: “In 1962, when forced by his boss to choose between his job selling copiers for Eastman Kodak and his hobby of racing sports cars on the weekend,” son Russel Tullius told Classic Motorsports magazine, “he made the difficult choice to leave his conventional career behind.”
Aside from a mid-'60s Dodge Dart program for Trans-Am competition, Group 44 Inc. stuck with the brands long associated with British Leyland for SCCA amateur competition: Triumph, MGB and Jaguar. By 1973 alone, Group 44 Inc. could boast of hundreds of wins and 10 SCCA national titles.
As other competition venues grabbed the limelight in the ’80s, Group 44 Inc. adapted, fielding successful programs in IMSA GTO, IMSA GTP and, once again, Trans-Am.
One dead silent early morning at Riverside in the 80s we awoke to the sound of the G44 IMSA V12 as it came up on the other side of the track from turn 1 through 6. It then accelerated through out of 6 toward where we were camped. THAT is one of the sexiest sounds in the racing world.
