Your Projects: An Escort that Rules the Dirt

“A friend of mine and I found it at a local salvage yard,” Matt Wolfe says of this 1993 Ford Escort GT. “We had been RallyCrossing his rusty, daily-driver Protegé5 and had been thinking about buying a dedicated car when we stumbled on this little gem.”

The friends had been told that the Escort only needed an alternator and an engine mount. An initial inspection revealed those facts to be mostly true, so they returned the next day with tools, parts and, Matt adds, “a lot of hope.”

“After an hour or so worth of work, we threw our battery in, turned the key, and the car fired right up,” Matt continues. “We drove it around the lot and figured out that it worked enough like a car that we could drive it home.”

Since late 2014, when Matt and Kiefer Snell picked up the Escort, they have been campaigning it under their Team Effort Motorsports banner. The car has seen action at RallyCross, ice race and even track events, claiming several championships along the way. At this fall’s SCCA DirtFish RallyCross National Championship, Matt added one more piece of hardware to the tally, finishing first in the Stock - Front Wheel Drive class.

I am kind of conflicted: someone (apparently?) "threw away" a fairly decent car, an Escort GT?  And on the other hand, here is someone else who picked up a near running car for what I am guessing was next to nothing (when I find cars that are barely running it is because a previous owner destroyed it).

Either way, good luck guys.
