Your Projects: Fixing Up A Long-Abandoned Dune Buggy

Many Volkswagen Beetles ended up being converted into dune buggies that could be seen launching off of the dunes down by the beach.

Not wanting to be left out, forum user Saron81 picked up for himself.

Based on a 1970 Beetle, Saron81's buggy had been sitting for "several years," so that meant that one of the first steps was to overhaul the fuel and brake system to make sure the vehicle could actually go and stop.

Later, Saron81 had to swap in a new engine after the original one overheated and caught a bad case of rod knock.

Also on the list of upgrades was a four-to-one exhaust setup that, according to Saron81, increases low-end power, but is louder under throttle. (Talk about having your cake and eating it, too.)

As a bonus, check out the paint job on the fan shroud:

Pretty buggy! Rekindling my desire for a tub. I used to work renting them to beach goers. They are a blast!

I always wanted a sand rail, instead of the buggy, but that's sharp. Love the shroud, too
