As revolutionary as the Wankel engine is, it can be understandably intimidating for many people. Not so for forum user Bent-Valve, who purchased an RX-8 with a bad engine back in 2018.

How did Bent-Valve come up with the name for his new purchase? We'll let him explain: "The engine smoked, had metal in the oil, and is generally toasted, hence Smoky."

Thankfully the purchase came with a good engine, which was quickly swapped into the car without too many headaches.

The most recent bit of work on the RX-8 was chasing down an oil leak, which led to some insights into the way Mazda engineered the engine—like the five-layer, bolt-in gasket that Bent-Valve discovered.
