We had a car, a partner and a plan. Now to put everything in motion.

We arrived at Cobra Automotive at about 3:00 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon. We finally got to see our 1965 Ford Mustang–our future vintage racer–in the flesh.

Shop owner Curt Vogt began barking out orders: “My cage builder is going to be here by 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. You need to have the entire interior stripped out by then. Time is money.”

Alan Galbraith, founder of the Concours d’Lemons and fellow Mustang owner, joined us on the adventure.

We dutifully jumped in. First to go: the rather sharp-looking aftermarket seats. Then we tackled the rear window, interior panels and carpet.

By the time Alan pulled the dash panel, it was barely 5:00 p.m. There we stood, with a gutted Mustang and a huge pile of interior parts.

Stripping out an entire car in less than two hours might sound like a huge undertaking, but Mustangs are simple and we know them well. When you know exactly how something goes together and what size fasteners are involved, the job goes quickly.

Now to finish up the roll cage.
