First Try at Carbon Fiber

We felt that that our front splitter was underutilized.

We cut out two 11x14-inch sections of the splitter.

We cut and glued together three pieces of blue insulation foam to create a male "buck," which was then sanded into the correct shape.

We then cut out a piece of carbon and laid it over the foam.

Slow-curing epoxy was then brushed onto this first layer.

The entire splitter was then coated with a layer of epoxy and laid over the two diffuser sections.

A second layer of carbon fiber material was then laid down and epoxied into place.

Once the element had cured, we trimmed the excess and mounted it back on the car.

Instructions are helpful when you’re learning a new skill, but often it’s better to just get your hands dirty. We’d watched people lay up carbon fiber, but we’d never done it ourselves. We picked a small project to get our feet—and fingers—wet.

We’re unsure how effective a front wing is on the LeGrand, but it’s pretty obvious that underbody aero is an area where we can improve our car’s downforce with minimal penalties in drag. We started with a pair of diffusers (sections of the underbody that expand to create low-pressure spots) mounted ahead of the front wheel. Theoretically, they should help our front grip at speed.
