Update by Per Schroeder to the LeGrand Mk 18 project car

The LeGrand Mk18 looks like a small Can-Am car.

The car is powered by an air-cooled Kawasaki motorcycle engine.

We‘ve been thinking about buying a D Sports Racer for use in Solo’s B Modified category for some time now. They’re typically 800 or so pounds and powered by motorcycle engines. The result is fun and frighteningly fast for very little money. We posted a note on a DSR forum looking for a car, and after a few not-quite-rights, someone e-mailed us about their Mk18 LeGrand. It turns out that this LeGrand is the exact car that Per’s dad purchased new in 1976; he even got his SCCA racing license in it. The kicker is that the car is quite reasonably priced.

How could we say no? We’re currently in the process of sorting out payment and shipping.

This was an awesome series. Showing there is a class for bigger than a shifter kart, not quite a full size car option.

This was one of my favorite rebuild and race series of the magazine.

The nice thing is that older LeGrands are still quite competitive in SCCA Solo Bowel Movement class.

What was the LeGrands competition?

Other LeGrands, and cars based on LeGrands. An AMAC or a Cheetah can do well also…

Dan Cyr has a BMod formula (open wheel) car that's very fast--and built to the current BMod rules. He won Nats in 2013, IIRC.

Poorly formed question on my part. What would be a direct competitor to a LeGrand manufacture/model wise?

A-Mac http://sports.racer.net/chassis/amac/page1.htm Cheetah http://www.omnifab.com/dsr.htm

In other words, the cars that you'll see being dragged back out for SCCA's SR2, now that the Stohrs have been put in SR1.

For autocross, the smaller flat-bottomed cars are most likely a better choice than the tunnel cars like the Stohr / West, etc.

BM allows 1300cc @ 1300#. So I'm going to bring my P2 (SR2/SR1 ended up as Prototype 2 and 1 after the dust settled) Out to a DC Region or AI solo event at some point this season. I predict stupid fun.
