Wheel and Tire Experimentation

Used tires allow us to experiment with sizing without blowing our budget.

The Keizer wheels are simply stunning—light and custom built for our application.

While not inexpensive, the Keizers are exactly what we need—light and perfectly matched to our application.

We started out using a 20-inch tall Hoosier R25a tire on the rear of our LeGrand. We soon discovered that this made our gearing way too short, allowing us to hit the top of third gear at nearly any autocross. We looked over the gearing charts for the KZ drivetrain and realized that we needed to go with a taller 22-inch diameter rear tire for now. We purchased a set of used R25b Hoosiers from USDRRT, and they should help us stay within our car’s powerband in second gear.

As we mentioned in an earlier post, we were investigating wider wheel widths to really take advantage of our nearly wide-open rule set. We ordered a set of magnesium-centered Keizer wheels that had the exact backspace and bolt pattern that we needed. The 13x8-inch wheels weigh in at 8 pounds apiece, while the 13x10-inch rears weigh a pound more. While not inexpensive, the Keizers are exactly what we need—light and perfectly matched to our application.

We’ll get these tires and wheels mounted up as our Solo season starts rolling.

Those wheels look great! The LeGrand is really coming together to be a sweet car. DO you have a link for Keizer?

The car is sort of coming together, but I'm basically just sorting it out before I tear it completely apart to double the horsepower, add a limited slip differential (instead of the spool) and go nutso on the aero.

Looking forward to that! Nothing is better then double the power.

Triple the power is better than double!

I hope that when this build goes to print in GRM, people will realize what a great class of cars the DSR's are to play with.

I'll probably be in the 2x range. 80-90hp to about 160-180 depending on the engine we use.

As a suggestion for solo with the new motor: Keep the charging system on the motor. Mine was disconnected when I got it and it was tough to keep the car cool at an event with two drivers. I wired it back up and installed an electric fan and it's easy now. It's also nice not to have to recharge the battery every day. The convenience and temp maintenance is well worth the couple of HP you may lose by running the system.
