Winging It

Update by Per Schroeder to the LeGrand Mk 18 project car

Our old wing was working fine, but we always like saving some weight.

We used pieces of plywood to mock up the end plates and get our angles right.

The entire wing assembly now weighs less than 10 pounds.

When it came to our LeGrand’s rear wing setup, we decided that less is more—less weight, that is. We’re replacing the rear aluminum main element and reworking our end plates to create a triple-decker setup with a 7.5-inch main element, a 5-inch secondary fla,p and a 3-inch tertiary flap.

The wings are mounted on new carbon fiber end plates. The net result is a 5-pound weight loss without any practical decrease in downforce. We’ll be out at the track soon for some testing.

Those were off the shelf elements that I'm stringing together in an array. Sure, not ultimately as effective as bespoke elements, but at 10 percent of the price....

The entire body is next. That's a winter project that's coming up.

Wow, you're going to make the entire body out of carbon fiber?

That's the tentative plan. I have the molds and I'd like to redo the nose in particular, and 25 yards of 55" cf fabric is only a few hundred bucks more than e-glass. And I save money by not necessarily needing to paint it.
