With any rally, a good measure of success is whether or not you finish the entire rally. Our Saab 99 wasn’t the quickest car out there (we’d argue it was probably the slowest at this point) we did finish every stage—finishing 21st out of 31 starters and 23 cars running at the end of the long day.
Our car sailed through scrutineering to get its new logbook. The only notation is that we need to have a couple of extra brackets for our fuel cell in the trunk.
Per was our driver. This was his third event, so he’s officially done going to the Novice Competitor Orientations.
Jason Grahn was our co-driver. He’s a good partner in crime for us.
All of the stages were heavily rutted with soft sand. We wound up getting stuck for a short while on Stage 4.
We added some oil in the second service. It appeared to be leaking from, well, everywhere. At least the leaking appeared to be coming from the valve cover gasket and somewhere down near the clutch.
The event was a lot of fun, we got our car logbooked and it survived.
Here’s a list of things we’ll be doing to improve it for the next event:
1) Pull engine and transmission 2) replace engine and transmission 3) install Gripper LSD 4) reinforce engine compartment 5) replace engine mounts 6) revise our fuel cell mounts 7) reinforce our front and rear tow hooks 8) redo our exhaust system (it didn’t survive its first event) 9) install a header
And the list goes on.
