Our SCCA Central Florida Region held its final points event for the 2005 season last week, and we finished second. While we didn’t hit enough events to get a year-end trophy, the final standings still show us finishing second in the Street Touring S class. (Our good friend, David Erecitano, took the season championship in his 1999 Civic Si.)
The event was held at the DeLand Airport, and the runway site meant that the course was again a down-and-back affair. Lots of high-speed offsets and gates were the norm. We started the day with 34 psi front and 40 psi rear. After almost looping it during our first run, we backed the rears down to 38 psi. In the end, we finished the day about a tenth of a second short.
Tomorrow the Martin Sports Car Club wraps up their season at the Lake Country Technical Center in Tavares, Fla. We have the STS season title sewn-up, although the fields have been a little thinner than we’d like. As a result, odds are strong that we’ll mount some R-compound tires and run in their G Prepared class next year—the fields in this class have been a little bigger.
Their Prepared-class rules are similar to the SCCA’s Street Prepared guidelines, although there are a few differences: computer chip/software may be changed; intake manifold may not be changed; no exhaust restrictions; no interior gutting; no restrictions to shocks, springs, anti-roll bars or bushings; any DOT-approved tires; any wheel diameter, but width can only go up 1.5 inches than stock.
That last item means we’ll have to run a 6.5-inch wheel, so we’ll probably do some juggling. Our plan is to keep our 15x7-inch wheels mounted with true street tires for SCCA events, while we’ll run some R-compounds on 15x6.5-inch wheels with Martin. The rules also allow transmission modifications, including the installation of limited-slip differentials, but we’re going to keep our tranny stock so it’s still STS-legal for SCCA events.
