We usually present a bunch of useful info in each issue of GRM, including how to make the most of your motorsports outings. As someone once said, do as we say, not as we do. We’re going to stick with STS at our SCCA events, but we’re going to compete in the G Prepared class with our local Martin Sports Car Club. These rules allow sticky R-compund tires, and, well, we showed up at the last event a little unprepared, as the car was on its BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW street tires. Our third-place finish out of five entrants shows how far off the pace we were. To rememdy the situation, R-compond tires have been ordered.
Martin’s Prepared rules are similar to SCCA’s Street Prepared rules, allowing things like bolt-on suspension upgrades, R-compound tires and some basic engine mods, including changes to the intake and exhaust. There are a few differences, however, in that the stock intake manifold must remain. They also limit wheel sizes, as competitors can only go 1.5 inches wider than stock. Since our Civic originally came with a 14x5-inch wheel, we’re limited to a 6.5-inch-wide wheel. (This is why we ran the car on its “street wheels.”)
Even though the class rules do allow the installation of a limited-slip diff, we’re going to leave our driveline STS-legal. The plan is to run both G Prepared and STS this year; we’ll just make sure we bring the right tires to the event.
