Okay, time to show the Civic’s colors, and the car is now sporting a new look: old-school red-oxide primer. After doing some thinking, we realized that there are a lot of red Civic hatches in the world so why not do something different. (People have been doing flat-black for a while, so we didn’t want to follow them.)
We (well, our editor, at least) have always been intrigued by hotrods still running around in red primer. Something about that color just portrayed a tough look. Some research said that you don’t want to leave a car in primer, however, as it will absorb moisture and lead to obvious problems.
Enter our own Carl Heideman with the solution: PPG DP74LF red-oxide primer. This is an epoxy primer, and Carl has used it on hotrods. It looks cool and wears like iron. Water beads on it like there’s no tomorrow. For cleanup, Carl says normal car wash stuff works fine but there’s no need to wax it.
And if/when we want to go back to red, the jams were carefully masked off.
