Because we knew the first few events for Project 2002 Civic Si would involve lots of track miles where raw times wouldn’t be as important, we started off using the hard-compound (C30) Hankook Ventus RSS Z211 tire. It was our hope that the harder compound would provide a good mix of grip and durability.
So far we’ve got about 45 minutes of shakedown lapping at Roebling road and the SuperComp school at VIR’s full course (about three hours) on these tires, and we’re very impressed with the wear and performance so far. They come on fairly quickly despite the hard compound and have a broad window of good performance; in our end-of-school race, it took several very hard laps of chasing down a Porsche 911 before we started to notice any degradation of performance, and dialing things back allowed the tires to come back after a bit more than one lap.
Based on the current wear, we’ve got many more laps to go before we’ll need to retire these tires. We’re hoping to have some sticker C50 compound Ventus RSS Z211s in time for the upcoming race at CMP; look for Scott and Per in early May at that event.
