The BBS RV wheels were needed because of the huge calipers in the Stoptech kit, this picture of the back side of the RV illustrates how much caliper clearance they have.
The kit features 4-piston calipers, stainless brake lines and 328mm brake rotors. Mmmm...Big.
A "BIG" improvement
We spent Wednesday night bolting on some of the biggest brakes we’ve ever seen on a FWD car. As we had been having problems making the stock brakes work on track, we worked with Stoptech and got their MINI Big Brake Kit. Pad changes on the stock rotors just didn’t cut the mustard at Sebring, and we burned through a set of Ferodos in just one weekend, more drastic changes were needed.
Stoptech offers a complete bolt-on kit that replaces the rotor, caliper and brake lines, the whole conversion took just over two hours thanks to quality engineering and awesome instructions. Like the directions to mount the RDR rear anti-rollbar, the Stoptech instructions include every tool needed within the text, down to the right Torx bit size and socket dimension.
Believe it or not, this attention to detail does make a difference as we were pressed for time (as always in the real world) and the install was painless.
Stopping improvements are amazing, but some of that is due to the poor condition of our stock brakes at the time of the stop. We’ll be testing the brakes once they are properly bedded in to compare with “as new” braking distances. Of course, the real test is out on track after a few dozen hot laps.
