It was fun trying to guess how many cylinders were misfiring as you came toward my flag station.
Just a week after its last event, our SVT Focus was back in action.
Our Chevy Colorado handled the long drive to the event with ease.
At SCCA rallycrosses, the participants work to make the event happen. We laid out and set up the course.
Look how many cones it holds!
We're finally starting to realize just how terrible the car's shocks are.
It does have its moments, though.
Our intermittent ignition issue reared its ugly head midway through our second-to-last run.
The Maxxis rally tires really gave us an edge coming off the line.
Afterwards, we stopped at a car wash to hose the car off. After all, we couldn't show up to the track day dirty.
After a round of fixes for our 2003 Ford SVT Focus, it was time for another event. Just one week later, our Chevrolet Colorado delivered the Focus to a Central Florida Region SCCA Rallycross.
Because it was a rallycross, it was a blast. Our Maxxis rally tires finally proved their worth in the muddy, gravel-strewn field. We had way more grip than we ever had with street tires, particularly when it came to accelerating and braking. Our greatest advantage came in deep mud, where we plowed through spots that other cars were nearly getting stuck in.
More grip is not always a good thing, though. We were finally getting used to rallycross, and it was now painfully obvious that our Focus was in need of some new shocks–and some more ride height. We ended up with mud smeared halfway up the transmission case, and heard some great noises from the underbody of the car while out on course. On the bright side, our new lower engine mount from Massive Speed System seemed to prevent wheel hop, and we’re finally getting used to shifting this poor little Focus.
The car still needs one other fix, too: our intermittent ignition issue reared its ugly head again. A fix would have to wait, because our car was signed up for a Hooked on Driving track day at Sebring International Raceway the very next day.
