Dyno Time for the Focus

Update by Tom Suddard to the Ford SVT Focus project car

A dyno is the best way to see what you're starting with.

But first, an oil change.

Don't forget to strap down the car.

Besides the fancy spark plugs, these aren't performance parts. But there's no sense in paying for dyno time, then showing up with broken plug wires and a dirty air filter.

EFS Combust: because why not?

Superchips kindly lets us use their dyno. They also make some awesome tuners.

Before we got too crazy with our Ford Focus SVT, we wanted to see what we were starting with. So, we headed to the Superchips dyno for a few baseline runs. While we were there, we did a little maintenance, too. We put parts-store plug wires and a fresh air filter on the car, as well as a new set of Pulstar spark plugs. Just for our own amusement, we poured in a bottle of EFS Combust, too.

The result: 151 horsepower and a car that runs smoother than it did before.

What about the torques!?

Isn't that about the factory rating.

I'm sure those Pulstar plugs helped.

Oh we can't forget the EFS Combust also.

Look for that number in an upcoming issue of GRM.

Factory rating is 170hp at the crank....I'll assume the superchips dyno is a bit on the happy side?

Back when mine was Dyno'ed back in 2007 via GRM, it recorded about 145 at the wheels. Mine feels just as strong now, so 151 seems reasonable.

Well, the website for those plugs advertises up to 7 HP gain, coincidence? I think not!

Plugs are bullE36 M3, its why I use copper.

Remember the bosch platinum #'s that claimed that in years past? Just a different dyno can cause that difference.

I changed my plugs recently as well, so coupled with my die-cut GRM sticker, I'm probably up to the full 170 hp at the wheels.

Understood. I was just going by the general 15% drivetrain loss.

151 Plus 15% - 173.

My math was a little bit off and came up with 12.xx% which could just be a healthy car....which would be unusual considering the milage on it, but not completely unheard of.
