Our 2003 Ford SVT Focus had a new battery, and it was time for another event. We headed over to the Central Florida Region SCCA’s final event of the season at the Saint Lucie County Fairgrounds in Fort Pierce, Florida..
Wow, it was wet. In fact, it rained so much, cars were getting stuck in the mud. Despite this, our Maxxis rally tires pulled our little Focus through, and we once again managed to win the Prepared Front class. This put our Focus at the top of the season’s point tally, making us SCCA Central Florida Region class champions.
Did we fix any of the car’s glaring issues before winning the season championship? Actually, yes. Our performance parts didn’t arrive in time, but we did finally fix the car’s intermittent drivability problems. The culprit was a bad MAF sensor. After replacing the unit, the Focus ran like a top all day.
Of course, every cloud has a silver lining, and our championship win had more of a grey border: We were the only car to compete in our class all season, meaning our Focus’s two drivers were only racing against each other. We’ll have to beef up our effort, and find some more competition.
