Let’s face it, we’re not typically satisfied with little original-equipment wheels—especially on a car that can accommodate much larger rolling stock. While perusing Tire Rack’s website, we came across what we thought was the deal of the century. They’ve got their TR Motorsports 17x8.5-inch C2 wheels in a variety of finishes for just $139 per wheel. That’s pretty impressive for such a large wheel—especially one that weighs only 19 pounds. We had them mount up a set of 245/40R17 Yokohama Advan Neova tires (the exact ones that we just used in our latest wet-tire test) and ship them down.
The difference with the new rubber is transformative, both visually and dynamically. We’re happy with the way the tires look, but now we need a better suspension to back up the grip afforded by the larger wheel-and-tire package. We’ve got some ideas on how to make the BMW wagon handle much better without compromising its daily driving manners.
Love it. I nearly order a set of those wheels for my own green (Subie) wagon but stumbled onto some used Gram Lights. Your pics almost make me wish I'd stuck with the TRs. And 245 Advans? Yum. Looks great guys. Can't wait to see what you do with the suspension. Did you do any baseline autocross testing when you bought it?
