Massive R-compound grip feels goooood.
Unmounted, the Goodyear tires stack up noticeably higher than the Hoosiers.
Once mounted on our 17x9.0 wheels, both stacks ended up being the same height.
Now that we’ve tried all of the fastest ST-class tires, we thought it was time to really step up the grip.
Now that we’ve tried all of the fastest ST-class tires, we thought it was time to really step up the grip. So we’ve tested some super-grippy 245/40R17 Hoosier A6 and Goodyear RS AC autocross compound tires.
As fast we’ve been able to go on the Hankook Ventus R-S3 ST tires, the fastest of the R-compound tires is still a full 2 seconds faster. Talk about spoiling us. All this grip makes us feel invincible.
The unmounted stack of Goodyear tires is nearly a half tire taller than the Hoosiers. Once we mounted both sets on our 17x9.0 TRMotorsports C3 wheels, the tire stack height became equivalent. Interestingly, the Hoosier stack didn’t really change when we put them on the wheels, but the Goodyear’s experienced some, err, shrinkage. Good thing, because the clearance to the front fender is really, really close.
Full results are in the October issue of Grassroots Motorsports, on newsstands as this is published and also available in our online store. We’ll also be running with the R-compound setup at the SCCA Solo National Championships in the C Street Prepared class, so we’ll see how the STR chassis preparation combined with massive grip will work in competition.
