While our Mustang came with the upgraded Brembo brake package, we can’t say we were ever truly happy with the braking capacity of the car, especially given the extreme stress on the brake components. For something so heavy, they really should have been more effective—or for something that was only moderately effective, they should have been lighter.
Ultimately, we found out we could have both: less weight and more stopping power.
Kenny Brown Performance has just released their Pro 4R brake kit that is an easy bolt-on to any S197 Mustang. It features four-piston aluminum calipers and two-piece rotors with aluminum centers. It also features some gnarly Hawk brake pads that are a full inch thick. Best of all, this kit is also about 17 pounds lighter than the stock setup. So we get more swept area, better design and heat dissipation, superior materials and engineering, and less mass. It’s kind of win-win.
We also upgraded the rear brakes with Kenny Brown’s rotor upgrade, which features rotors a full inch larger than stock and spacers to retain your stock calipers.
All of this cool brake hardware was developed by Kenny Brown Performance in conjunction with Baer Brakes. Look for a full report in an upcoming issue.
