We’re ready to burn some rubber at Solo Nationals in Lincoln, Nebraska.
For our VW’s big competition debut, we ordered some new sneakers: BFGoodrich g-Force Rivals. Super-fast tires that are civil enough for the road.
The Tire Rack SCCA Solo Championships are coming up, and this, year we’re looking to make history: first diesel-powered car in the Stock-class ranks. (At least we’re pretty sure that’s the case.)
Either way, we’ll be among the thriftiest ones there. Before our 2013 Volkswagen Beetle TDi hits the long, diesel-powered road to the SCCA Solo Nationals in Lincoln, Nebraska, the most important piece of our puzzle just arrived: tires.
We’ll be competing in the new Road Tire category in the RTF class for front-wheel-drive cars. Road Tire is a category that encompasses cars prepared to Stock class rules (shocks and one anti-roll bar may be replaced, but no other significant performance mods are allowed), but running on 200 treadwear or greater tires (regular stock classes are allowed to run DOT race tires). We think it’s a great alternative for folks who need to daily drive their autocross cars and don’t have the space or desire to keep a dedicated extra set of wheels and tires around.
And as the winner of our most recent tire test, we couldn’t help but to choose a set of BFGoodrich g-Force Rivals for our VW. The Rival was specifically designed with the autocross/track day crowd in mind as a fully streetable tire you could drive to the track. We’ll be putting more than 3200 road miles on our Rivals on the round trip to Nebraska, so we’ll certainly be able to fairly judge their streetability by the time we get back.
We love all VWs, whether water-cooled or not. Subscribe to Grassroots Motorsports now.
