We have been living with our 2015 MINI John Cooper Works for about a month. This particular car came from the media introduction, so it’s fairly loaded, too, sporting almost every possible option other than the panoramic sunroof and automatic transmission. It does have the optional 18-inch wheels. You can argue that some of the options aren’t exactly hardcore, but beggars can’t always be choosers.
First impressions:
This is built more to a BMW standard than past MINIs.
Not much if any turbo lag. The engine is there when you need it. No waiting.
Nice gearbox. It’s smooth. It’s not rubbery.
Yes, it’s bigger than past MINIs. The back seat is also usable this time, too.
Depending on road surfaces, there can be some NVH.
We’re constantly seeing 25 mpg around town. That’s on the low side of the EPA estimates, but we confess that most of our driving is done in the Sport mode. Plus we’re not hypermiling. It’s also fun to chirp second gear.
