I bought this car for a friend of mine, who ended up buying a house which kept him from buying the car from me. With only 150,000 miles on the clock it should have been a relatively easy proposition to get the car in A1 shape. Went through the car replacing common wear items like the brittle taillamps and turn signals. I replaced the in-tank pump and the odometer gear as preventative maintenance. I found a couple of leaks, so it got a new radiator and water pump. All fluids were changed, the interior was steam cleaned and the body was clay bar’d and buffed. Then my not so trusty battery charger cooked the computer. Turns out that it was putting out 36 volts when the highest setting is 12. Also it turns out that EGR equipped 92 240s are pretty rare outside of California. With a cooked computer and no possibility of finding one locally, I ended up stuck with the car till I could source a new PCM. I finally found one and the car ran beautifully. I put about 100 more miles on the clock before I thought it was ready for a new home. I handed the new owner a stack of receipts, service records and a title. He handed me 24 $100 bills. 30 minutes later my phone rang. The car was blocking interstate 40. On fire. I returned 24 $100 bills to the poor chap whose day was only slightly better than mine, got a slightly wet title back and proceeded to divert the wrecker from their impound yard to my warehouse. Ran fine for weeks. No leaks. Nada zip zero. Now you can see through the engine block. Two big holes in the engine block. What a waste of a lot of time, money and a super clean Volvo.
