Apr 15, 2012 update on dennisg's 1934 Vintage Race Cars { once it was a post office jeep}

second annual spring rebuild

Its fuel cell was too small, 5 gallons was not enough gasoline..I would run out of gas easily, and fuel float gauges don’t do well in a foam filled fuel cell, so I made an auxiliary fuel tank to fit between #58’s driveshaft and frame…with 3” clearance to the driveshaft for peace of mind. I had a small propane tank which I cut in half and lengthened to 27” by brazing in a section of 20 gauge mild steel which I rolled to fit the ends. As a small tank its function is to give another 50 miles range when switched on. Fire extinguishers are a possibility for a lighter fuel tank. Their metal is thin brass or stainless steel so they only weigh 4 lbs empty. (7 lbs lighter than my propane tank). I bought a stainless one and will report what I learn converting it to a gas tank.
