I have always wanted to remove it, but figured that the car worked, and the alarm really seemed to have it’s tentacles in there pretty firmly. I thought about swapping over the whole manual column, ignition and all, but since it was a junkyard part, I didn’t have a key for it. Instead, I took out the power column, took both columns apart, separating the harness for the ignition switch from the lock cylinder. I recombined the old power column ignition lock with the unmolested manual column ignition wiring on the manual column. Same old key, new steering, and new wiring. This gave me the courage to rip the rest out. I labelled all the loose ends in case it won’t start.
