Jun 28, 2011 update on dollraves's 1991 Mazda Miata

She moves!

So, in trying to move my lovely little Otter from the Oakland warehouse space to my new home (with the Garage of Awesome), I burnt out what was left of the clutch trying to load it onto a friend’s hauler. Greeeeat. Fortunately, there are plenty of Miata racers around, so a discarded OEM clutch can be had very, very cheaply. With my recent surgery, though, I’m still unable to lift much, so Devilman kindly tripped down from the mountains and did the clutch for me while I as out of town this weekend. I got to drive her yesterday for the first time.

She’s not happy.

I mean, at idle, very happy. In motion, though…still metal-on-metal screaming that increases with speed and goes away at idle. Also, 5th gear likes to pop out randomly, and sometimes it’s impossible to get into first. sigh Oh, and the timing belt looks like it could go at any moment. I’m less worried about that one, since I do have a lovely RX-7 engine waiting in the wings. :D But, I do need to keep it stock and running long enough to get it registered when I get back from vacation in a few weeks.

I at least gave her a bath. I still need to break out the steam cleaner for the interior…the mildew smell is deadly!
