This was the first Series III 109 Station Wagon built. It was cobbled together in 1972 and shown at the Brussels International Motor Show. The Series III was actually released in 1973, so this is a pre production example. I purchased and restored it in 1992. It is clearly and obviously a Series 2A with the Series III trim ( or similar to but not identical to production SIII trim) stuck in. It has the 6 cyl motor, all synchro overdrive series 3 gearbox , fairey freewheeling hubs and some trim nice touches which were probably Motor show add ons which never made it into production like a vanity mirror! It was later purchased from Land Rover by a young couple who drove it from London to Sydney over a 4 year period. They settled in Oz (no doubt considering it easier to uproot and emigrate than drive the thing back!!!) and used it until 1992 when they traded it in on a Range Rover. I purchased it off the dealer with just under 500,000 miles in the log book, and only on its second engine rebuild and maybe the 4th gearbox rebuild. All original numbers in the car, but unfortunately in a moment of idiocy I fully resprayed it about 15 years ago, so it lost its patina of shining worn aluminium. It is Mariner Blue, my favourite Land Rover colour, and has limestone wheels and naturally the Safari roof, also limestone. It is 100% factory original right down to the finest detail.
