That time a Mini competed in NASCAR | Video

NASCAR hasn’t always been about stock cars and big V8s–just take some of the cars mentioned in this video.

The Porsche 911, Mini Cooper and even a VW Beetle have all competed in NASCAR races in one form or another.

Smokey Cook's MG at Bowman-Gray in 1963 is the last import car to race in Nascar's premier "Cup" series until Toyota joined in 2007.  Cook was a skilled Nascar "Modified" racer and former track record holder at Bowman-Gray.  His #32 was likely the same car Robert Berrier drove to a top 15 finish in the 1962 running.

The little MG, with some 50 horsepower, was no match for the power (and bumpers) of the big stock cars.  Cook may well have pulled in after 12 laps to avoid being punted off track.  His MG was the only "International" car entered in what would be Nascar's final "International 200".

Jr Johnson, driving Ray Fox' #3 Chevrolet, won, leading every lap.

I'd love to see some Porsches take on some dirt tracks today. That'd be fun to watch.

I've seen some 924 and 944 race in hornet and  mini stock classes. The 924 in a hornet rules was dead ass slow.
