Across most cultures, a hood up like this can signal distress.

Help!”

I can use a jump!”

Car nut running at the moment.”

But here, other than the obvious fact that the engine resides at the tail end of a Porsche 911, that open front lid signifies something else.

Look closely: No aids are required to keep the trunk lid open. No hockey stick, no tree branch, no Vise-Grips crudely clamped in place.

Why is that? While my Porsche 911 was recently in for service, I (finally) remembered to ask my mechanic to install my new hood struts.

The hood now stays open on its own. It even makes that hydraulic sound as it’s lifted into place. (It’s the sound of victory, I tell myself.)

I’m going to call that an achievement, and I’d love to hear about yours, whether major or, like this one, not.

A not-so-big win I'm proud of? One of the brackets that holds the top rack in our dishwasher broke.

The rack could still hold dishes, but if you tried to pull it out too far, it would just about fall.

My wife and I aren't the most mechanically inclined, but we managed to order the correct replacement piece (bonus points because it was a 2-pack) and replace the bracket ourselves.

Finally replaced my daily driver with something a little nicer, a 2012 Volvo C30 T5 R-Design.  Wanted one for years and found one locally in reasonable shape with thorough maintenance records.

Probably gonna post the old car for sale on the forums soon when I get around to it.

A friend an I recently rebuilt the Carter 4 bbl carburetor that had never been off the car in 60 years.  That may not sound like much, but I've never done that before.

I got released to drive again. Like, drive drive. Headed to Topeka Friday to put that to the test. E36 M3 is still broken but it's usable and damnit I need this win.

In reply to Datsun310Guy :

Good for you 310guy. Especially if it's your own body weight, not the Datsuns. A little tip from me and this is not to be racially motivated but cut out everything "white"  in your diet.. white bread, white rice, whole milk Etc.. please don't think chocolate milk is ok because it's not white. I hope you stay the course and don't fret about set backs just always return to trying to achieve your desired weight .

     Good luck!!

So, a little more to the story.

I picked up the car at the end of the day, and upon turning the key realized that someone (me) left the car flat out of gas. So I slogged through rush hour traffic to gas up and get home. The car drives so much better now, by the way. (And updates to come on the Classic Motorsports site.)

A day or so later, I remembered that I hadn’t yet checked out the new hood struts so, of course, I had to run into the garage and experience them.
