BMW has leaned hard into sim racing in the past couple years with iRacing, after initially offering limited options on high-end sim platforms. Part of that was due to the desire of the company to tightly control the product being released to the public, and now that they’ve seemingly found a way to partner with sim makers to provide content they approve, sim racers will soon have yet another exciting BMW option for iRacing.

The BMW M4 GT4 will join the M8 GTE and Z4 GT3 in the iRacing lineup in June, and will be available for several series. Just as in the real world, the M4 will challenge the Porsche Cayman GT4 in iRacing’s IMSA Pilot Challenge, and it will also be available for the exciting BMW 12.0 spec series, currently the domain of the M8 GTE. The BMW 12.0 is one of our favorite series in iRacing, combining intense, short-duration sprint races with one-make and fixed-setup spec racing to create an exciting but balanced series.

Producing a heavily licensed sim racing car is remarkably similar to producing a factory-built racing car–especially when it comes to iRacing’s partnership with BMW. The car company’s engineers provided iRacing not only access to the cars for laser scanning and reference photography, but provided all the CAD files and documentation–the same ones used to construct the real GT4 race cars–so iRacing engineers could precisely model in the sim. So the digital version of the M4 GT4 is essentially a working digital model of the real thing. In other words, it’s about as close as you’ll ever come to driving an M4 GT4 unless you can knock out James Clay. (Spoiler alert: You can’t, and he will beat your ass with a vintage jet ski if you try.)

The M4 GT4 will be available for select races in mid-June, before rolling out for more series about a week after its debut. It should be a $12-$15 in-game purchase (depending on how many iRacing cars you currently own).

That's awesome! I really need to hurry up and get another sim rig built.

By far my favorite series in the game right now. Run every hour with time in between it awesome, performance-balanced cars? What's not to like?
