In our annual search for the fastest track machine on four wheels, the Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports, we don’t normally ask for proof that you are building a car–just that you, you know, actually show up to compete.
Regardless, Chris Nelms attached photos of his entry into the Ultimate Track Car Challenge, a 2021 BMW M2 Competition, being prepared ahead of the event to prove that “when I say it’s being built, it’s being built.”
While the 555-horsepower M2 didn’t compete in last year’s UTCC, the BMW is undergoing several modifications over last year’s car.
In addition to stripping the interior to save weight, the car will also receive improved aerodynamics, suspension, fueling and even a brand-new livery, with Nelms adding that “literally everything will be touched and rewired.”
A fire suppression system is also in the works, as is an upgrade to wider tires: From 285-width tires on all four corners to a staggered setup consisting of 315-width tires up front and 335-width tires out back.
The Ultimate Track Car Challenge, in which the rules simply require that both car and driver pass a safety inspection, takes place October 26-27 at Kentucky’s NCM Motorsport Park alongside the Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials Nationals Powered by Hagerty.
