What makes this Toyota MR2 race car extra special? Is it the tube-frame chassis? The wide-body kit? The sub-2000 pound weight?
No, what makes this MR2 unique is the location of its engine: Instead of sitting neatly behind the driver, it’s been moved to the front of the car.
Why? For improved weight balance, says driver Gregory Hotz.
Built to compete in the SCCA GT Lite class, the MR2 is powered by a 1.6-liter Toyota 4AC engine built by Don Preston. A dry sump keeps everything lubricated, and two side-draft carburetors keep the engine well-fed.
Gear changes are handled by a five-speed, Houseman T50 dog box. Suspension-wise, Penske 8100 shocks plus cockpit-adjustable front and rear sway bars responsible for keeping the car planted.
To slow things down, the MR2 is fitted with Wilwood Dynalite calipers and rotors.
Yes, it’s an impressive list of go-fast parts, but will it all be enough to outperform the competition and be crowned the Ultimate Track Car?
We’ll find out October 26-27 when this MR2 takes to the track at Kentucky’s NCM Motorsport Park for the 2024 Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge presented by Grassroots Motorsports, our annual search for the fastest machine on four wheels, which takes place alongside the Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials Nationals Powered by Hagerty.
Rules for the UTCC are simple: Both car and driver must pass a safety inspection. That’s all.
Outside of that, build your track car however you see fit: Twin turbos, custom-built chassis, massive wings, sequential gearboxes–it’s all welcome at the UTCC.
