Well look at that.

What’s more rad than getting the keys to a Hyundai Ioniq 5 N? How about getting the keys for a whole week–and that week is the Tire Rack One Lap of America Presented by Grassroots Motorsports Magazine?

SOUTH BEND, Ind., April 30, 2025 –Hyundai Motor America announced today that it is partnering with Grassroots Motorsports magazine to compete in the 2025 Tire Rack One Lap of America presented by Grassroots Motorsports. Hyundai Motor America has also been named Official Automaker of the 41st running of this fabled annual motorsports gauntlet, which will see teams competing in a series of racetrack challenges around the U.S. from May 3-10, 2025.
One Lap veterans Andy Hollis and Tom Suddard will campaign No. 44, a stock 601-horsepower 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 N all-electric SUV in the Alternative Fuels class. Suddard is the publisher of Grassroots Motorsports, the hardcore sports car magazine, and Hollis is the publication’s tire tester and a champion racer. Hollis, a 13-time SCCA Solo national champion and professional high-performance driving instructor, has notched 10 One Lap class wins in over 14 attempts, including two teamed with Suddard. Neither has previously campaigned an EV in One Lap.
“I was smitten with the massive torque of an EV the first time I drove one. But until now, none have been truly track-capable right off the showroom floor,” said Hollis. “Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 N checks all the boxes with excellent cornering, great brakes and sophisticated battery conditioning that allows all that torque to be used for an entire session. I can't wait to get behind the wheel on some of the country's best tracks.”
“After winning our class in a gutted, caged race car last year, we wanted to compete in the best-of-all worlds this year: A vehicle that’s incredibly fast, incredibly comfortable on a road trip, and incredibly capable on a racetrack,” said Suddard. “Electrification means it’s finally possible to have huge power without huge compromises in a street car, and the IONIQ 5 N promises to pair that huge power with the durability and capability to survive a week of racing.”
In addition, Hyundai Motor America is proud to be named the official automaker of the 2025 Tire Rack One Lap of America Presented by Grassroots Motorsports. Hyundai is providing event staff with the use of three 2025 Palisades and two 2025 Santa Fe Hybrid SUVs, along with a 2025 Santa Cruz Sport Adventure Vehicle.
Created by the late legendary automotive journalist Brock Yates, One Lap is widely regarded as the toughest street-legal car challenge in North America, a true endurance test of participants and their machines. Amateur and professional drivers alike compete in stock and heavily modified vehicles of every description, battling it out in a series of scored challenges, including timed events at road courses, drag strips, skid pads, and autocross courses. In between tracks, competitors safely travel thousands of miles around the country, proving the mettle and durability of the vehicles and the teams that drive them. The event’s route and tracks change every year. This year, 86 teams from all over the country will compete in 17 scored events over the course of eight days. Tracks include Virginia International Raceway and NCM Motorsports Park.
“One Lap of America has a hard-earned reputation as the country’s most grueling street-legal motorsport competition for drivers and their cars. But it’s not only demanding for competitors, it’s also a singular test for our event staff and support vehicles,” said event organizer Brock Yates Jr. “Safely logging thousands of miles in between long days timing and scoring events requires vehicles that have the right mix of space, comfort, reliability, and intuitive tech. These Hyundai SUVs aren’t just welcome, they are essential.
Super intrigued to see whether you are able to keep the car charged while driving hundreds of miles a day and racing.
SCCA2019 said:Neat! Three days is plenty of time to prep the car, right?
One day, really. We fly in tomorrow, fetch it and prep on Friday.
But the whole idea is that it's ready to go from the factory. We are required to swap tires to new ones from Tire Rack, though.
Oh...and I've been practicing my 30-minute "power" naps. Gonna be a lot of them with a 200-mile range.

It won't be the first time an EV has competed and completed the event. One even finished on the overall podium.
Taking delivery of the car the day before the event, nice :) Although I seem to recall that Andy has taken more than one brand new car on this particular road trip...

Certainly wasn't our plan for such a late delivery but it's where we ended up.
And yeah, Team Temp Tag strikes again.
Safe and comfy travels, lads!
It looks like Flatrock has been replaced with NCM on the final itinerary?
And here's the backstory on our reasoning:
