During the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, the new Porsche 911 GT3 R was unveiled. The company built it with endurance racing in mind, as the 24 Hours of Le Mans replaces the GTE class with GT3 cars in 2024.
According to Porsche, engineers focused on improving drivability to increase performance, achieving this through primarily bettering aerodynamics and the car’s overall balance.
Porsche Motorsport based the car on the current 992-generation 911. That includes its engine, which increased in displacement from 3997 to 4194cc over its predecessor. This boosted power to 416 kW (565 PS).
An elevated underbody in front of the front axle, a smooth undertray and a rear diffuser improves downforce without a significant increase in drag.
They tilted the engine forward by 5.5 degrees, which provides more leeway for the underbody diffuser.
Engineers optimized the positioning of the central pivot points at the front axle to free up space for the new underfloor. This creates a path for clean airflow to the rear diffuser and reduces pitch sensitivity of the car, such as what is experienced under high braking.
In regards to improving the weight balance, Porsche moved the alternator and air conditioning compressor a meter forward and further down into a space in front of the engine and gearbox.
Engineers also pushed the rear wheels back–extending the wheelbase from 2459mm to 2507mm. This reduces load on the rear tires and improves the consistency of their performance over longer stints.
Starting in 2023, customer teams can compete with the Porsche 911 GT3 R. Porsche Motorsport offers the car for 511,000 Euros (just under $525,000).
