Making a list of the worst kept secrets of all time? Make sure you add “manual transmission for the GR Supra” close to the top.
The world first got confirmation that a manual transmission is on the way for the Supra thanks to Toyota UK, but now Toyota USA has finally confirmed it as well.
The biggest takeaway? All six-cylinder Supras can be optioned with a six-speed manual starting with the 2023 model year.
Looking for something a little more exclusive? Toyota will produce a limited A91-MT Edition that can only be configured with the manual. Also exclusive to this edition are the Matte White and CU Later Gray exterior colors, a Cognac interior and a red Supra badge. Only 500 A91-MT Edition Supras will be built, and they'll only be available for 2023.
All 3.0-liter Supras (A91-MTs included) will receive “refined handling” thanks to new steering and suspension tuning, a standard active rear differential and a new feature Toyota calls Hairpin+:
The ambition to make the GR Supra fun to drive in the most demanding scenarios has helped inspire the introduction of a new Hairpin+ function. This is designed to allow more freedom and reward when taking tight bends on an uphill gradient (more than 5%) with a high-friction road surface. More “freewheel” spin can make such routes more enjoyable to drive, so Toyota has optimized engine torque control to allow a greater difference in the degree of wheel spin on the left and right-side tires.
Pricing is set to be released later this summer, with the new manual-equipped models hitting showroom floors sometime later this year.
What will be on dealer lots first?
Manual Supra?
GR Corolla?
TRD Pro Sequoia/Tundra?
Not Toyota:
2023 Civic Type R?
400Z?
All five of them will undoubtedly sell immediately, then be covered in Saran Wrap for eternity, somewhere near Funk & Wagnall's doorstep.
April 28th 2024 Press release. Toyota are announcing that they are stopping sales of the manual Supra as approx 2% of vehicles are being ordered that way after the initial rush of 50 manual cars being ordered in the first two weeks after it was announced.
