The good color.
Forum user ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ had a few requirements for their next rally car: a relatively recent build date, decent parts availability, a fixed roof and no forced induction.
What car fit these criteria? A Scion FR-S—specifically, a 2013 model with 50,000 miles.
The plan, then, was as follows:
- Measure/plan/design around what wheels will fit (15s are a must, because rally tires), how much suspension travel we can get (move mounting points?), and things like underbody protection
- Fix whatever is going on with the engine
- Execute suspension/wheel/brake changes
- Rallycross it a lot
- Chip away at remaining little things like more underbody protection, lights, any other engine/drivetrain/suspension mods
- Rallycross it some more
- Cage, safety gear, logbook, stage rally
Fast-forward to a few weeks ago, and the plan turned out well:
At the time of writing this, however, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ explained that the car had been involved in an accident. All occupants are reported as okay, though the FR-S is going to need a new “headlight, fender, door, strut insert, and some quarter panel repair at a minimum.”
While the car repaired, check out the “BRZ Rally Car… Eventually” thread over on the Builds and Project Cars forum to catch up on the whole build process.
Not mentioned is that it has been LESS THAN A YEAR since its acquisition, re-engining (twice, if you count the dealership's work), new shock and strut tower fabrication, IS300 rearend installation, roll cage fabrication, logbooking, and first collision.
