Want to build a replica of a 550 Spyder, but don't want to take the easy route? Take forum user wearymicrobe's approach:
"Plan is to build a 550 spyder to the highest quality possible using the spirit of the 201* ruleset. That means horse trading, buying old cars and cutting them apart for parts and selling off carcasses and doing absolutely everything myself."
There are two caveats, though, as safety and paint are things that wearymicrobe won't be skimping out on (partly because it's probably the smart thing to do and partly because it's difficult to do yourself under California law). Instead, professionals will handle building the roll cage and the actual paint spraying.
Another consideration to take into account is that the replica will be built and registered in California, a state that is, in wearymicrobe's words, "the land of paperwork and environmental reports."
Fast forward to the most recent update, and wearymicrobe has a coat of paint on the 550, the doors attached, and the gauges installed in the dash.
Wiring is the next big-ticket item on the to-do list, though we'll take a moment to appreciate the period-correct decals wearymicrobe is having printed.
