Do you know if your wheel studs are still safe?

The wheel studs on our Garage Rescue Miata are now more than 30 years old, meaning they’ve probably seen things. Are they still up to spec, or are we moments away from having a bad day? (After all, those studs only secure the wheels to the car, right?)

We figure it’s time to do the adult thing and replace our Miata’s original wheel studs, ordering fresh ones from ARP: longer than stock and with a helpful bullet nose to ease threading.

The ARP studs are rated at a tensile strength of 190,000 psi–surpassing Grade 8 specs–while the threads are rolled after heat-treating for improved fatigue strength. Finally, the studs are cadmium plated for long life.

In round numbers, we’re looking at about $160 to do the entire car. Cheap insurance, we figure.

Note that ARP lists two part numbers for the NA-chassis Mazda Miata:

  • 1990-’93 Miata: part No. 100-7719 (front and rear)
  • 1994-’97 Miata: part No. 100-7719 (front) and part No. 100-7720 (rear)

Once we fit the new studs, we’ll report back on the installation process.
