How to easily give a race car a livery | Project Endurance Race Miata

We’ve been hard at work refreshing our Miata endurance racer, swapping in a more powerful engine, stronger brakes, beefier suspension and more. Now it’s finally time to make it look the part.

Vinyl wraps have become the default answer for race car liveries, and the reasons are simple: They’re cheaper than paint, quicker to install and easier to replace if any damage occurs. We knew we’d be wrapping our Miata, and we knew what our livery would look like, too: Why not just match our 350Z’s vinyl wrap?

That only left one question: Who would apply the vinyl to the car? We wrapped the 350Z ourselves, and while the cost was appealing—the wrap kit cost less than $800—the labor was not. Wrapping that car trapped us in the garage for around 30 hours total, and we simply didn’t have that much time for our Miata. 

Instead, we trailered our Miata down to our favorite local wrap shop, Side Effects Custom Graphics and Wraps in South Daytona, Florida. And in stark contrast to wrapping our 350Z, wrapping our Miata was insanely easy: We showed the company’s owner, Rusty Abadie, a photo of the 350Z, and said we wanted our Miata to match, and drove away.

A few days and $2300 later, we picked up a shiny Miata wearing lots of 3M wrap to create our livery. Success!
