2007 Mazda 5

Mazda3 Hatchback with an extra seat. Stiffer suspension than non-Mazdaspeed. Great track car other than the additional weight (http://www.youtube.com/speakgeek). Custom cold-air intake, MAF mod, Magnaflow muffler, EBC Yellow Stuff pads, Kumho ASX 215/50s: 181 hp. Need Mazdaspeed3 full exhaust for more top end.

And here I thought I'd be weird if I was planning on just autocrossing a Mazda 5! A mini-minivan on track is pure awesomeness!

I would think autocrossing the Mazda5 would be harder. The wheelbase is long and the extra weight is off the drive wheels. I spin the front tires as high as 15 mph in a straight line and up to 25-30 in the turns. On the track, I rarely get into these speeds and the extra rear weight helps plant the rear tires. Note: the Mazda5 has a normal negative camber both front and back.

Had a member ask about the MAF mod. Like most OEM setups, the A/F mixture is conservatively rich at load. This is calculated from the MAF. I added a 10K ohm trim pot to the middle wire of the MAF and adjusted it to lean out the mixture by about 10%. This requires monitoring the A/F ratio so you don't burn up the engine but it was good for about 12-15 HP. It doesn't effect the off-load mixture (which is controlled by the O2 sensor) or the long-term fuel trim. I also noticed that the short-term fuel trim is more stable and the recovery from load to off-load is quicker. Also note from the graph that torque is greater and more gradual for better control.
